Find out the possible health effects of e-cigarettes and heat-not-burn products (e.g. IQOS). Take part in paid research study at UCL today. Scroll down to find out more.

We want to investigate the possible health effects of using novel nicotine and tobacco-containing products, i.e. e-cigarettes and heat-not-burn devices (e.g. IQOS), compared with smoking conventional cigarettes. To do this, we want to assess what potentially harmful chemicals enter the bodies of people using these products compared with those not using these products.

Receive £20 Amazon vouchers & up to £5 cash travel reimbursement (per session).

Complete the short online screening survey.

We wish to recruit 3 groups of participants:

(1) Current smokers (who have smoked manufactured or hand-rolled tobacco cigarettes for at least 6 months) (for two 30-60 min sessions).

(2) Ex-smokers (who now vape, i.e. use e-cigarettes) (for one 30-60 min session).

(3) Ex-smokers (who now use heat-not-burn products, e.g. IQOS) (for one 30-60 min session).

  1. Complete the screening survey.

  2. You will be emailed with more info & asked to schedule a visit to UCL.

  3. Before the session, you will be asked not to: use any nicotine/tobacco products, eat food, drink alcohol or use the toilet from 1 hour before the visit.

  4. At the session, we will ask to take your heart rate & breath measurements & ask you to provide a urine sample.

  5. You will be asked to complete a questionnaire about yourself, your health & smoking behaviour.

  6. If you use e-cigarettes or IQOS, you will be asked to use your own product for 5 mins outside & then repeat the heart & breath measurements and another questionnaire. This will be the end of the study.

  7. If you are a current smoker, you will be asked to use either an e-cigarette or IQOS (provided by the researcher) & then repeat the heart & breath measurements & another questionnaire. You will then be asked to schedule a second session to try the alternative product a week later.
